Phil McGowan & The Easy Winners with guest vocalist Kellian Pletcher

August 28th, 2015 | Category: dances

Phil McGowan & the Easy Winners, BSC favorites, will join us at Extreme Dancesport for another high energy gig! With their New Orleans inspired hot jazz tunes, they will get you out onto the floor all night! The Easy Winners always get the crowd moving when they play for us and and this Friday will be no exception. Digging deep into their catalog of hits from the past, they’ll light fire to tunes like the 1921 Eddie Cantor hit: “Margie” and Louis Armstrong’s “You Rascal You”.

Joining the band is lindy hopper, rabblerouser and Boston’s own troublemaker, Kellian Pletcher. If you haven’t met Kellian before, you should because she wants to dance with you. But not while she’s singing because her feet get caught in the mic wires. Come cheer Kellian and the band on and as always, save a dance for her.

Here they are tearing it up with Boston Swing Central in 2012!

Count Basie “Band” Night with DJ Katie Piselli

August 21st, 2015 | Category: dances

It’s Friday night and Count Basie is your band! As a celebration of one of the greatest American jazz band leaders of all time, BSC presents a Count Basie DJ Night, brought to you by hardcore Basie fan, DJ Katie Piselli.

William “Count” Basie was born in Red Bank, New Jersey. A pianist, he began his career in vaudeville before eventually forming his own big band. Basie’s band helped define the swing era with hits like his theme song, “One O’Clock Jump.” Basie had a very long career in jazz, made many recordings, won multiple Grammys and worked with a plethora of power house artists like Lester Young, Jimmy Rushing, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Williams, and Frank Sinatra. The Count died in 1984, but his incredible music lives on! Tonight is the night to dance your hearts out and pay homage to this jazz legend.

Your DJs:
Katie Piselli (as Count Basie)
Katie loves to mix the old with the new. No matter what decade they’re from, she loves jazz songs with great rhythm and bass, killer vocalists, memorable melodies, and distinct instrumentals that inspire the imagination. (She also LOVES a good line dance or two.) As a regular social swing dancer and teacher in the Boston area, Katie particularly enjoys finding super swingin’ music for new dancers. To all social dancers, if you’re enjoying the music together and you’re having fun, you’re doing it right!

Cari Meisel (“Band” Breaks)

Cari Meisel got her start dancing in 2009 when she accidentally tried out for UPenn’s West Philly Swingers dance troupe. She was hooked from the first triple step, and hasn’t stopped swinging out since! In 2013, Cari moved to Boston to start graduate school, and, of course, to do more dancing. A huge part of her love of the dance comes from a love of the music – from old to new, big band to small combo, she loves it all! As a DJ, Cari aims to spread this love by playing great music and letting dancers do what they do best.
