The Foxtet is a six piece band led by trombonist Dan Fox and comprised of some of the best local musicians who have decades of combined experience playing for swing dancers. Fox has worked as a sideman at Boston Swing Central with Adrian Cunningham, The Lowdown Stompers, the Easy Winners and with Shawn Hershey. It’s Mardi Gras weekend, so let’s party New Orleans style. We already have a swingin’ jazz band, so let’s add some loud costumes to the mix! Don your tutus, your bright colors, your shiny fabrics, masks you can dance in, and shake it all night to the Wolverine Jazz Band!

Since 1995 the Wolverine Jazz Band has been entertaining lovers of Traditional Jazz all over Boston and southern New England in town concerts, private functions and a long residence at the Sherborn Inn.  During that time they have also become favorites on the national festival circuit, performing in Arizona, Washington state, Tennessee, Ohio, Colorado and Florida for large audiences – including the swing dances which have become an important part of those festivals.  Comprised of up to seven of the finest local players in the idiom, the Wolverine Jazz Band is adept at music ranging from the ragtime era through the late swing period, all played with energy and an informed approach both to presentation and the music itself.

Miranda (aka DJ Legs Magoo) became addicted to dancing during her high school days in South Carolina and with DJing soon after. Along with DJing regularly at all three of South Carolina’s swing scenes, she has DJed for several lindy hop and blues events in the state, including Charleston Lindy Exchange, Greenville Lindy Exchange, Holy City Blues Exchange, and Swing Into Spring. Her favorite part about spinning tunes is inspiring people to get on the dance floor.

Katie Piselli
Katie loves to mix the old with the new. No matter what decade they’re from, she loves jazz songs with great rhythm and bass, killer vocalists, memorable melodies, and distinct instrumentals that inspire the imagination. (She also LOVES a good line dance or two.) As a regular social swing dancer and teacher in the Boston area, Katie particularly enjoys finding super swingin’ music for new dancers. Boston Swing Central is very excited for one of our most beloved swing dances of the year! Baby Soda was formed in 2007 by musicians who met playing traditional jazz in the street and subway with The Loose Marbles. They get every dancer dancing, every foot tapping, and every hand clapping. The are best known for the uptempo style of street jazz. “With an eclectic set of influences ranging from 30’s era swing, New Orleans jazz, and southern gospel,  the ensemble doesn’t desire to recreate the past, rather they bring the concept and joy of the music to the present.”

The 18-piece Beantown Swing Orchestra specializes in performing big band dance charts from the Swing Era, all transcribed from the original vintage recordings by trumpeter Danny Fratina.  Some of their favorite arrangers include Fletcher Henderson and Sy Oliver, whose work was performed by Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and Jimmie Lunceford.   With most of its musicians in their twenties, Beantown Swing Orchestra is a true representation of the young and energetic big bands of the 1930s.

Their repertoire concentrates on classic big band swing music including many Duke Ellington and Count Basie numbers ideal for Lindy Hop and swing dancing. Much of their great catalog of songs showcases their phenomenal singer, Debby Larkin. It promises to be a night full of killer-diller arrangements that will keep you dancing all night long!

This dance will also be extra Balboa friendly (since we have some Bal folks visiting from out of town, if you’re not familiar with Balboa or Bal, then you’ll see it and there will be a lot of songs where one can dance swing, lindy or Balboa). First Set: Andrew Selzer
Andrew Selzer started DJing for weekly dances in the college town of State College, Pennsylvania; but these days he hails from Boston, Massachusetts. With over five years of experience dancing Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag, and Balboa all over the globe from Paris, France to New Orleans, Louisiana he brings to the table music true to the swing era that appeals to the international swing dance community.

Second Set: Stan Yen
Although he started swing dancing in 1997, Stan can still remember being captivated by Duke Ellington’s East St. Louis Toodle-Oo and Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue in a college class almost 10 years earlier. He started DJing out of necessity in 2010 when he and his wife, July, decided to grow the Balboa scene in the Boston area and needed to provide music for practices. Since then, he’s DJ’d locally at MNP, Uptown Swing and the BBJ in Providence while continuing to be the “House DJ” for Boston Balboa’s regular events. Recently, he was also the strictly competition and post-band DJ at the Great Lakes Balboa Escape in Chicago.

He has a thing for xylophones and songs about food or with unusual lyrics. He likes to stick with artists from the original Swing Era (with a particular fondness for the late 1930s), but that hasn’t stopped him from occasionally playing more contemporary songs so long as they make him want to dance — he hopes they’ll make you want to dance too.
